Extension of a residential building

Keywords: Migration Period, Sarmatian, layer finds
On 14 September 2020, archaeological monitoring was conducted in connection with the extension of a residential building. Earthworks were carried out on the southeastern side of the existing house for the relocation of a basement entrance and for the strip foundation of an annex. The basement entrance pit measured 1.5×2.5 m and was excavated to a depth of 1.8 m. The strip foundations of the new building section were 40 cm wide and covered a 9×7 m area, reaching a depth of 90 cm.
Beneath the current walking surface, a blackish-brown, silty sand mixed with minor modern debris was observed. Below 60 cm depth, natural black, gravelly silty sand appeared, followed by greyish-white silty sand subsoil from −80 to −100 cm. From the natural black layer, two ceramic sherds of archaeological age (Sarmatian) were recovered, although no archaeological features were identified.
The black silty sand observed at the construction site suggests a waterlogged area that was likely seasonally inundated in the past. The groundwater table currently appears to be relatively high, around 2 meters. The natural terrain rises gently to the north toward the Szilas Stream. In the higher areas, several traces of archaeological settlement have previously been recorded, the closest being a group of Sarmatian-period features documented during construction at 28 Ferenc Street (BTM RA inv. no. 7079–2018).
