I conducted an archaeological observation in Budapest, District I, on Gyorskocsi Street (between Markovits Iván Street and Batthyány Street). The location lies in the southern part of Víziváros, and falls within the archaeological zone of District I.
Monitoring of the earthworks related to the construction began on March 30, 2020, and was completed on November 4, 2020. In the trench excavated for the project, soil was removed to a depth of 1.2–1.5 meters from the current street level, along the route of the existing line. Beneath the solid road surface and its foundation, a brown, stony, debris-filled, brick-containing layer appeared. The work area had been heavily disturbed by earlier utility installations.
From this brown, stony, debris-filled layer, small, stray medieval ceramic fragments and animal bones were recovered. One red-fired ceramic piece, dated to the 15th century, showed traces of white engobe and remnants of green glaze. In addition, a plain, undecorated gray-fired body sherd was also found among the artifacts.
